Too many Bike Clubs to count

Since Lucky #7 can get to ride for free if a bicycle club or group signs up, we thought we'd give a shout out to all the bike clubs, groups and organizations that have come on GRABAAWR®, SAGBRAW® and the Bike Northwoods tour.

When we started going through the past couple of year's registrations we were astounded at how many members of bike clubs have ridden with us. See if someone from your club joined us and rode across the Dairy State.

3RVS, AABTS (Ann Arbor Bicycle Touring Society), Arlington Heights Racers, Baltimore Bike Club, Bay Shore Bike Club, Bay View Bicycle Club, BBSC, Bellevue Bicycle Club... click here to see entire list

Registration opens November 1st.

New This Year: GRABAAWR & SAGBRAW RV Plug-ins!

Something new and exciting and everyone is talking about it: RV Electrical Plug-ins!

As we're figuring out the routes for next year (November 1st is fast approaching), we're trying to consider our 4-wheeled vehicles that transport our friends and family from overnight site to overnight site.

Since we're introducing new sites next year, we're proud to be able to offer RV electric plug-ins, (at select sites on GRABAAWR® and SAGBRAW®), for all types of buses, mobile home, 5th wheels, caravans, microbuses, trailer homes, popup's and electric cars.

We want to make sure that all of our tour participants are comfortable when they arrive at each overnight site.  And as you know with RV's it's nice to be able to plug in to charge your devices, grab a cold one out of your refrigerator and save your generator (the "tenters" will be thankful as well because the noise from the generators is unforgiving).  Also we don't have to direct the motorized home vehicles to a separate campground; they'll be able to participate in the onsite fun!

So beg, borrow or steal (ok, not steal) an RV, and we'll see you under your awning enjoying a cold one.

Lucky Number 7

The number 7 is considered lucky by many people across the globe: the number 7 was considered a "God number" in Egypt, the Japanese have 7 lucky gods of fortune and it's the number of days we bike the GRABAAWR®.

So we've changed our group policy at Bike Wisconsin® to have that lucky #7 who registers with a group to bike for free!  So get a group together, whether it be friends, family or your bike club, and sign up for the 2014 GRABAAWR®, Bike Northwoods Tour or SAGBRAW®!  We want to share vacationing by bicycle with more than just the "hard core cyclists" that seem intimidating out on the path (but if you sit them down after a ride with a beer in their hand, they're some of the most affable people you'll ever meet).

Bike Wisconsin® wants you out in the biking community (whether you're heading to work or training for an Iron Man) to set the pace for exploring your surroundings by bicycle.  So get a group of buddies together, sign up for a tour and see our beautiful state.  You'll definitely pick up a few more friends along the way.

New Assistant Tour Director

We are happy to announce Joanna Gellerman as the new Assistant Tour Director. We are so happy that Joanna has agreed to step up to this important job. So many times riders have come up to us on the tours these past couple of years and said that Joanna is a great asset to the tours. We are in awe of her friendly manner and attention to details, rare gifts for a recent college graduate. We look forward for great things to come for Bike Wisconsin®.

From the Desk of Joanna...
Hello bicyclists, my name is Joanna Gellerman and this is my first post as your new Assistant Tour Director for Bike Wisconsin®!  This will be one of the most intense and rewarding jobs I will ever have, and I'm so excited to come back next year!  I've been the Social Director, Motel Luggage Valet Driver and Tour Assistant for the past 2 years so Eric and Kathy thought that I should add another job title to my resume.

My goals are to get the rider numbers up and to have more younger riders who want to start a revolution by vacationing on their bicycles.  I'm so excited to share with everyone what I do for Bike Wisconsin® and I hope you're excited for the 2014 tour season!  I know I am, and I've been hard at work since our last tour (SAGBRAW®) ended in August and I can't wait until next summer!

In future posts, I'll lay out my crazy ideas for 2014 with behind-the-scenes sneak-peeks about organizing not one but three bicycle tours.

Young, Poor and Out of School? No Problem!

Calling all young adults...
For 2014 we raised the age to 25 for the Young Adult riders registration fee on all the Bike Wisconsin® tours!  It's a goal that we set for ourselves to increase the number of young riders on the GRABAAWR®, SAGBRAW®, and the Bike Northwoods tours.  We want to make a vacation by bike available and fun for all and by making it affordable more young adult riders will sign up and lower the average age of the tour.  Get a group together and you can save even more! Our Social Director is tired of being one of the few people on the tour too young to remember seeing a Rolling Stones or a Grateful Dead concert with all of their original band members.

We'll be using Social Media (Facebook, the blog and Twitter) to reach them by letting them know that touring by bicycle is the next best thing that's here to stay (like the iPad and Whole Foods).
Exploring the country on your bike is an amazing way to spend your time because it gets you out of a cubicle or off the couch and experience Wisconsin, beautiful places filled with adventure around every corner.

So enjoy the ride!

Shout Out to Bayfield WI for Keeping Us Cool

From the Desk of Joanna:
I have been writing thank you notes to all the volunteer groups, civic organizations, chambers of commerce, and our sponsors. To give you some idea what a big task this can be I have been writing the cards for over two weeks now. There are a lot of groups on all the tours. These are the folks who really make the magic happen. We couldn't do the tour without them and we are greatly appreciative of everything they do for us and you on the tour.
One of my most vivid memories was our stay in Bayfield on the Bike Northwoods Tour.  The weather was sweltering (it felt like 95 degrees in the shade) when we rolled into town. We were worried about our cyclists, who would be hot from their ride from Port Wing. Unfortunately Bayfield High School did not have air conditioning, and we were concerned that we would need more fans then might be available.  So I called the Bayfield Chamber of Commerce and talked to Debi Smith to see if they could help.  They were awesome! They immediately emailed their contacts in Bayfield to see if anyone could loan us a fan for a few days. My cell phone started ringing and didn't stop until 5pm the following night.  We ended up receiving 30 fans from the community!  Wow!!!   As I drove all those fans back to their owners the following day, I realized that our community of cyclists is but one of many communities connected by a kindred spirit.  We inspire people to discover Wisconsin on their bicycles and connect with caring individuals in each community that make a tremendous difference, and touch our lives when we really need it the most.

Thank you everyone who helped to make the Bike Wisconsin® 2013 summer tours a success!
